The long and winding road and nature's eye candy

Today we have travelled quite a distance from Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road, a very windy road on the southern coast of Australia 2000 km from Antarctica. We left early this morning from Federation Square with an eclectic group of people. Our bus driver/tour guide Frank has been very knowledgeable and has the typical Australian wit. He has given us quite a history on today's journey with some well placed jokes that Pappy would find funny and laugh at. Visited some coastal beach towns in the morning, and saw some amazing cliffside homes.

We stopped in Apollo Bay for lunch, only minutes before a poor lady on the bus lost her breakfast, luckily in a sick bag and not on her neighbor or one of us. Trish plugged her ears to avoid doing the same. For some reason we were still hungry, all three of us craving some pizza. We walked to the cafe that had pizza on the facade to find that it was closed. Found another cafe advertising pizza, walked in to find that the pizza portion of the restaurant was not working. Bummer. Trish can't seem to find a good burger either, hopefully one of these days. So far Australian burgers are yuck!

On the road we also were lucky to see a forest full of koala bears. They were grey bundles of fur snuggling together in the trees...very cute. Jen and Mandy spotted some, Trish was not so lucky, maybe at the zoo.

The pictures will never do justice to the beauty we were able to see today. Frank encouraged everyone to stay awake on the way to see the Twelve Apostles (sandstone and limestone monoliths) Some of us were able to power through, most were not. We made our way through a rainforest that is wet 200 days of the year, it rained a bit today as well, so we were apart of one of those days. As the rainforest came to an end we headed into some of the greenest pastures we have ever seen, we wanted to freeze time to take it all in, kind of an impossible task at 80km an hour. Seriously, it was gorgeous. Trish wanted to jump off the bus multiple times to get some still shots. Next trip!

The Twelves Apostles were like nothing we have ever seen before. The Loch Ard Gorge was by far our favorite, google it! Jen was attacked by a rouge wave, but only ended up with soaked jeans and shoes. The power of the waves was astonishing. Jen's jeans and shoes are still soaking wet but Frank cheered her up a bit when he mentioned a past passenger being completely soaked head to toe. That would be much worse though but sitting in wet and sandy jeans for almost three hours isn't that great.

Movie trivia: We travelled on a road that was used in Mad Max and even better, we passed Bells Beach the beach shown in the amazingly fantastic final scene of Pointe Break starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. Say it with us now "He's not coming back."

We also were able to squeeze in some puppy love today. See pics. First was the cutest little Staffy, that Trish wanted to make Nans' sibling. Second was Dingus, the official town dog of Port Campbell, he doesn't need an owner because he owns the town, the local shop owner says he just shows up where the party is, we are pretty sure he has more than one comfy bed to sleep in at night. The three of us thought he kind of looked a bit like an Australian version of Roger. What do you think P&E?

Flight to the Gold Coast (northwest Australia) tomorrow! Tonight we get to tackle a foreign washer/dryer combo. Wish us luck!

G'day T&J (it rhymes)
P.S. RIP Steve jobs, thank you for helping in making blogging like this possible!

Mandy's Accident Report:
Slammed her head into the side of the tour bus ceiling, not once but twice.
First loudly in front of entire bus. Second time occurred 1/2 second after Jen reminded "Mandy, watch your head." We can't make this stuff up. (To be fair, Jen conked her head too, but not as loudly and noticeably). Be sure to see the bathroom bruise updated pic as well, its a beast!
